Whilst at my golf club the other day there was a discussion going on about the relative merits of the TaylorMade R9 and the Nike SQ Dymo STR8-FIT drivers. Now drivers are a thing that create strong opinions and in this case each party to the conversation was sticking by their own driver. Each of the guys in the discussion was extolling the merits of their particular favourite and didn't seem to be budging. The golfer supporting the Nike driver then asked the question "when did a Taylor Made driver last win a major?" this got me thinking so I decided to do a bit of research.

I signed online and looked it up and it seems that the last time was 2004 when Vijay Singh won the USA PGA in fact that year Taylor Made won 3 majors so had a very successful year. Next thing to do was to check out when a Nike driver won a major and of course thanks to Tiger they have won plenty, in fact 7 since 2004. Other brands such as Callaway, Wilson (Padraig Harrington) and Titleist has also done well with Ping and Cobra had both winning 1.

The fact that most of the wins come from a few top players really shows that the number of major wins by a type of Golf driver is irrelevant when it comes to discussing which is better in the hands of an amateur. The two golfers at the club would have been better taking the clubs up the range and hitting a few shots with each club.

Try and hit a draw a fade and some straight drives and see which comes off best; problem sorted. Choosing the best driver by looking at which professionals use it and by how many tournament wins there have been is ridiculous: but how would you go about finding the best driver?

Well look through a number of drivers and pick 3 that look good at address and sit nicely behind the ball, try all three and get fitted for loft, shaft and lie. Make a few swings with each on a driving range and then take the one that is the most consistent.

Don't choose the one that hit the ball out of the park once and the rest were awful, pick the golf club that offers the best average. EASY! Then go online and buy it cheaply, I know that sounds terrible but it's a buyer's market and online you get the best deals. Try www.golfonline.co.uk they have a massive range at great prices.

So don't follow Tigers advice follow the advice of your swing and the results you can get from your own investigations. You can be a good golfer but probably not as good as Tiger!
